BMU Episode 456 for Halloween

Episode 456 was my Halloween episode which always incorporates Colin P, Davies' classic tale Happy Halloween narrated by Kelly better known as Crystal Wizard.  I absolutely love this story which has a masterful twist at the end.

The first story is a treat as we don't get to have stories narrated by Ron Huber.  The story is called the Benefactor written by David K. Scholes.

I start however with the movie Vice.  With Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane among others.

You can download, or simply play the episode by selecting HERE

BMU 449 is online with a story "Deep Web" from David Scholes

welcome to Beam Me Up, episode 449.

This week I gripe about the lack real news or at least news that isn’t focused on death and depravity!

I take a break and play “Luna Industries” theme music for the movie “Moon”.

From there I found an article describing the sling shot effect that the larger planets have on smaller craft.

The Keplier space telescope has made a startling new discovery.

Finally, David Scholes’ story “Bad Dreams” finishes out the week.

Enjoy

Beam Me Up episode 442 Deep Web - David Scholes + IPS #34 - Jason Kahn

Hi and welcome to this week’s episode of Beam Me Up.  This is episode 442.

Area of discussion this episode is quantum mechanic’s proofs and the many worlds conjecture as a results of one area of quantum “proofs”

I start this episode with a musical name “The Right Time” which was the closing theme for the anime series Paraclete.

The first story this afternoon is episode 34 of Jason Kahn’s “In Plain Sight”

From there, I head it over to the blog for Beam Me Up. This episode starts with the quantum many worlds idea, which is bizarre enough on it’s own right, but when combined with a mathematical proof system, its then that things get well, weird.

I talk for a moment about the “proof of concept” film “Sundays” which of its own right is a wicked powerful as well as a compilation of all that made the sci fi adventure flick entertaining.

There is now mounting proof that super-nova are indeed the things planets are made of.  A lot of them!

I found an app that shows all the cyber – well – attack activity around the world and how much is pointed straight at the USA!  Not just government but private institutions as well!

and the final story this afternoon is from David Scholes called Deep Web.  A strange and weird story about very very deep web sites.

And That is it for episode 442!  Enjoy!

BMU episode 406 now online

Hey there! Welcome to Beam Me Up episode 406.  This week my opening comment reflect those of Kallimus who is constantly amazed at the capacity of the human animal for stupidity. I use his comments, posted on the Beam Me Up blog, as my opening comments.

I also discover that Dark Inspectre stories have been lacking.  So I take the latest installment that played back in December and play that in hopes that it jogs people's memory and I will start with news installments as soon as I can get them from Mr. Kahn.

Then I move back to the blog for a few of the latest articles that have peaked my interest.

First is a review of a short film on YouTube called Payload...

Then a new product that the inventor says will be the end of food! And you will not believe what they call it!!!

ABC renews Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.!  Plus another surprise!

Finally Mr. Scholes changes gears slightly and brings us "Human Hunter" which is a departure from his Trathh series.

There is enough to entertain. I hope you find it as such.  Enjoy

BMU 392 Now Online Kahn's Dark Inspectre + Turnbull's part 1 of A Wondrous Gift - Doug Turnbull

Jason Kahn
Jason Kahn

dowload-small
And here we are the last episode of Beam Me Up for 2013.  I think, considering, that the program went well this year.  But back to what goes on with this program.

I start with one of my favorite pieces of anime music.  The Flame which is the opening music for Requiem for the Darkness.

Then Phil joins me as we honestly started to do Star Trek trivia but got off track as we found that many stars of Star Trek went on to star on Twilight Zone which I really have a soft spot for.  The episode we got off track on was TWO which was I think episode 66 staring Elizabeth Montgomery and Charles Bronson as two soldiers from opposite sides of the conflict.  One of my favs also. Then Terror at 20 thousand feet staring William Shatner which gave me nightmares for years.  lol  and we talk about some of the other episodes we enjoyed.

Then a new episode of the Dark Inspectre series...episode 23.  Things are not looking good for inspector Jack Garrett.

I then review the Will and Cypher Smith in their latest movie After Earth.

From the blog, new evac units that is truly something out of Terminator!

And finally part one of A Wondrous Gift by Doug Turnbull.

BMU #385 Now Online

After my opening comments at the start of Beam Me Up 385 I play Listen by Meakitty which if don't miss my guess is a riff on Zelda

Next I take a moment for some Star Trek TOS and talk about the episode "The Alternative Factor" and some of the hijinks that went on to ruin what could have been a very good show.

From the BMU Blog first off, the most recent meteorite strike in Russia and how this may reflect negatively on frequency of impacts..like maybe instead of every other century, every decade or so.

What would the North American coastline look like if all the polar ice melted at once.  The Russians had to move a Soyuz capsule to make room for a new complement that another Soyuz is bringing up to fill out the crew complement to 9.

It also may be possible that the Milkyway and Andromeda may have already collided 10 billion years ago and as such may fundamentally change our understanding of gravity.

You will not believe the age of the person who has discovered a supernova that no one has ever seen before!

And finally David Scholes The Battle at Times End which is a fine story.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

That's it!  Hope you enjoy the program
Paul

Beam Me Up episode 377 Now online

Wow, Beam Me Up episode 377, that is what three in a row without self-destructing again!  Hey I am on a roll here!

Sooooooo couple of stories on tap this week as well as Star Trek trivia and news from the blog.

The first story for the afternoon is Kevin Phyland's 'Long Shot'

I follow that up directly with Star Trek Trivia.  This week, part one of  'Menagerie'

Finally getting caught up on the news articles, so from the blog:  First Kallamus does his weekly rundown with some really good news,  life may have come from Mars to Earth..., I post a short video of a add for a tv screen, but how they show how good the screen's resolution really is.....well you can't help but laugh and I think only Japan could get away with this,  one of the largest shield volcanos in the solar system has been discovered and it is right here on Earth!

Finally for the afternoon...Part 1 of Dean Giles “Dave”

Episode 375 of Beam Me Up is now Online!

Welcome to episode 375 of Beam Me Up.  That’s right, NEW Episode!

This week I start with Plain White T-s singing their Pet Cemetery which is the theme song for Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie.  I do have to break over and review Burton’s stop motion treatment of the Frankenstein’s monster theme.  To be honest, I enjoyed the film.  I like Burton’s stop motion offerings and he didn’t cheap out.

From the blog:

NASA scrubs an eva for a most unusual reason.  How to train Your Dragon number two is due to be released.  3D printing is really taking off in a great way….NASA is experimenting printing various parts in critical areas of space craft (at present engine parts)  that might make in flight repairs possible on more complicated systems.

Newly discovered moon around Neptune?  Transcript from Apollo 10 finally available.  Asteroids the movie?  Should the Apollo / Moon sites be protected like national parks….?

1 year on Mars for Curiosity!  Neil Arstrong’s birthday in August….  Along with Mr. Schrodinger….here kitty kitty…..

Computers that think like humans……not software but completely new hardware…  T anyone?  T1000 that is.

Is the universe truly expanding?

Why Russian astronauts dread preflight….

NASA wants to auction off the MLPs…..honest!

Our story is Star Bright by Tsana Dolichva…..a great piece of flash fiction from Antipodean online magazine.

Plenty of thought provoking news and a great story too boot!  Enjoy!

BMU # 367 In Plain Sight #20 - Kahn + No Great Magic #5 - Leiber

I lead off this week's episode, episode 367, by doing a short memorial for Heinrich Rohrer Father of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope.

I follow this with a new episode of in Plain Sight episode 20 from Jason Kahn. This week our detective Jack Garrett falls a bit further down the rabbit hole and finds information can come from the most unlikely of sources.

In science...I start with Earth Sky talking about the possibility of intelligent life in the Milky-Way and how we are looking for it.

Next I read the high lights of Kallamis' weekly run-down which goes from honoring Sally Ride to food replicators...

Oh and I finally have time for some Star Trek Trivia!

Fredrick Doyle also died recently. Doyle was instrumental in developing some of the most sophisticated optics and camera systems for the Apollo era moon missions as well as work for the CIA.

I review the animated feature: Rise of the Guardians

Finally I play chapter five of Fritz Leiber's No Great Magic

BMU_246 Call Me Joe con - Poul Anderson

After my opening monologue concerning talking animals in entertainment plus a comment concerning a Burt Lancaster movie called Swimmer I play a couple of excerpts from Earth Sky.

from the blog

Barry sends in info talking about a Star Wars Christmas television special, honest and yes we have links to the documentary and half of the star War Christmas special. Oh my...

NASA has a new deep space z1 space suit that bears a  strong resemblance to ummm well Buzz Lightyear! No kidding!

From MIT come the news of a "quantum"computer. More to the  point a hybrid, and this configuration would vastly speed the or reduce the power consumption of the average pc. The speed  comes for the quantum states (which seems to be 500 or more,  but more on that later) and do it with far less wattage.

What if dinos were still around, would you eat one? If so, which would be a good choice? I discuss this subject from a Pop Sci article.

Oh, since the world didn't end would you believe that instead of despondency they only figure that it must have been the wrong day for the apocalypse  And speaking of quantum computers, I talk about an article where scientists from the USA and China are working on a system to identify quantum states and boy are there a lot of them!

And finally I play the last part of Poul Anderson's Call Me Joe

I hope you enjoy this weeks output, don't forget to visit the blog and add your 2 cents to the mix!

Enjoy!

BMU # 342 Now Online

Episode 342 is ready to go...in a manner of speaking!  There were times when the computer seemed to have a mind of its own!  Anyhooo  I start with a breezy piece of music called The Flame which was the theme opening song for Requiem for the Darkness.  Strange and evocative music to match the anime series!  Well worth checking out!

The first story of the afternoon is another fine piece of flash, by Mark Webb, that he did for the  flash fiction Antipodean podcast/magazine site. located in Australia, called, “Make mine a Macchiato”  Oh and don't forget to check out Mark's book of flash fiction on Smashwords.  Details after his story!

I manage again to squeeze in some Star Trek trivia!  Once again this week, I do a couple questions from the animated series.

First thing in the science department is a story concerning the possible formation of Mars, on this week's Earth Sky.

From the blog,  the largest black hole EVER discovered.  Did the LHC create new matter?   What??? did the U.S.  Really try to blow up the moon?  People believe this?

And Finally our second story of the afternoon, part 4 of Poul Anderson's  “Call Me Joe”

That's it!  Enjoy!

BMU ep. 340 Now Online!

And hello gentle beings! Welcome to episode 340 of Beam Me Up!

Boy, the hour goes by quick today! After the opening monologue I start with the first story of the show.

This week is part 2 of Poul Anderson' s “Call Me Joe”. This is proving to be one of the more excellent multi-part stories. Anderson's story holds up REAL well, because he downplays the tech end of the tale forcing your imagination to depend on the characters for support.

Next I travel to the Star Trek universe for Star Trek Trivia. This week I begin to do questions from the animated Star Trek!

This week I review The Hunger Game and Prometheus movies, that's right! Two movies!

People often take science in the movies as fact but in truth, most are just so much fluff. I challenge listeners to come up with some that we may have missed. I mention a few as do some readers and the IO9 article mentions a couple....If you have a favorite, write in the blog's comment section with additional material. Some of these are so bizarre!

And I end with episode 14 of the Dark Inspectre series In Plain Sight.

BMU # 339 Now Online

I am excited about this week on episode 339 of Beam Me Up.

This week, for a taste of classic science fiction, I start off with part one of a libravox recording of Poul Anderson's Call Me Joe. A great work on tele-presence from a master author.

Earth Sky this week speaks about Jovian Trojan asteroids, which are very strange bodies!

Sandy it seems did more damage to some irreplaceable objects!

Prosthetic devices were big news in the past week. First is the Bebionic3 prosthetic hand which is a remarkably accurate prosthetic hand! And the gent who sat a record by climbing the Willis 103 floors? What makes it record breaking is that he did it while wearing an electric powered prosthetic leg! Leg tech has lagged behind that of hand and arms, but this development advances the tech in several well deserved areas!

Fox's series Fringe is ending it's run in January of 2013.

Apple and Microsoft have been granted patents that border on outright foolish to "how can this NOT be illegal?!!!" I spend a few moment covering some of this news that is listed on the blog.

Then to take a short break, I do Star Trek Trivia!!!!

Is math painful? For some it may be!

And finally! Erin Bassett's Clockwork episode 7

That is it for Beam Me Up #339, I think you will have as much fun listening as I spent this weekend doing it!

Enjoy!

Paul

BMU #336 Now Online!

Well I was accused of going on at length with this week's program, but there are always something that will set just about anyone off, and it just so happens that there were a few this week!  But all in all, I didn't fall asleep this week, so I must have been interesting!

I start off with a funny one liner that xnewsman sent in.

From there I have one of Family Guy's segways that may not have much to do with science and fiction, but everything to do with supercilious public radio! If you can't poke fun at yourself?  You know?

Mark Webb adds another story in his interstellar government functionary arc.  The Earth has been destroyed and the Humans that were lucky enough to be off planet are now only capable of the lowest form of menial labor...Mark Webb's The Devil Wears Shapeless Ugly Garments, Covered in Dog
Hair.

The Earth is far from quiet in space.  Not the spurious noises caused by man but the various other magnetic and electrical noises that are constantly emitted by the globe.

You will be amazed at what it sounds like!

Earth/Sky again spins up with some fascinating facts about Pole Wander, which I had never heard about but it is fascinating.  From there I take us right into a new Star Trek trivia!

This week's review is the movie "Battleship" based on, of all things, the board game of the same name...oh yes.

China has the idea that virtual supermarkets are the thing!  13 thousand square feet of empty racks filled with virtual goods!  I am serious!  And you won't believe the company that has invested heavily in this idea.....

Finally,  from the fertile imagination of Jason Kahn id the newest episode of In Plain Sight.  This week episode 13 "Home to Roost.

These and other subject this week on Beam Me Up # 336

Episode #333 is Now online

Another Week, and another episode of Beam Me Up.  This week is episode 333!  Plenty of stuff to get you thinking this week.

I open with Symphony of Science’s newest track.  A very well done track called “We Can Change the World – Our Biggest Challenge”  which deals with global warming.

As a tie-in to this song I read editor Kallamis' rant on the lack of general understanding of even the most basic of scientific phenomena, in this case, the phases of the moon and the “new” moon in particular.  It would be funny, if it weren't so sad.

First break of the afternoon is a new episode of our telepathic detective of New Eden,  Jack Garrett in episode twelve “The Fearful Dead” by Jason Kahn.  Garrett's world continues to get more complicated and even stranger and dangerous often at the same time.  People are dying and something is feeding, but what....

And of course, what would a week be like without a visit to the Star Trek universe and two new questions this week.

Next from the folks over at the Earth Sky website report that scientists are rethinking the “goldilocks” zone where life might exist with liquid water.

Curiosity has uncovered evidence of liquid running water at some point in Martian history in the form of an ancient stream bed.  This is great news for the proponents of Mars being a wet world at some point in its' history.

This week's review is a dvd of the move “Priest” which tries to be a lot of things to a lot of people.  Motorcycles, stream trains, steam punk, big guns, vampires and much more.   Is it as bad as it sounds? Well, catch my review...

For the final act of the afternoon.....part six of Ed McKeown's ever so excellent novelette “The Dive” This week, plans are formed and set into action to hopefully stop the invasion of the horrific beings from the underworld.

That about winds it up!  I think you will agree that this week is an excellent episode.

Beam Me Up episode 329 is now online

Episode 329 of Beam Me Up is chocker block full this week!

First off is an interesting song I found while looking for background music. From Fit and the Coniptions is Sweet Sister Starlight. Not really science fiction themed, but strand and undearving. And can we go a week without any star trek trivia! I end the star date questions with the final two this week. On to other Star Trek questions next week!

The first story this week is a piece of flash from Antipodean called Addiction from Natalie Potts. Demonstrating that addiction can take many many forms. Next from the Beam Me Up blog I review the anime series Sounds of the Sky. A short 12 part series that has the potential to grab you and hang on. Next up is three articles from earth / sky that run the gaumet of interesting features. For some interesting Curiosity news, a youTube enthuiast took the 4fps landing film and converted it to an astounding 25fps and the effect is amazing! Next it's news concerning Juno and Dawn spacecraftwho have made different burns to help them complete their missions. There are several other less than Earth shattering but fun stuff worth checking out.

Finally I play part two this week of Ed McKeown's The Dive and things are getting weirder!

That's it in this week's episode. Check it out, I would hazzard a guess that you find it entertaining!

BMU #328 now online Goodbye Mr. Armstrong

This week on episode 328 of Beam Me Up I start with the new remix of John Anealio’s George RR Martin is not your bitch in his new electronic remix.

The first story this week is part four and conclusion of All That Touches Air by An Owomoyela. Ron Huber continues his great read of this exciting story.

I do a quick review of Armored from Baen Books edited by John Joseph Adams. This book contains over 20 stories that explore all the variation an armored suit can take in different environments and worlds. If you like this type of fiction you will not be disapointed by this collection!

Next on the list is Star Trek Trivia where I answer last week’s questions and pose new ones!
I follow this up with a couple of really good Earth Sky articles.

During earth_sky listener Barry called to tell me that he had just heard that Neal Armstrong had just passed due to complications from his heart surgery earlier this month. Needless to say, the tone of the program changed a bit.

I take a trip over to the blog to cover some of the other stories that have peaked interest. One is a facinating article of observation of a pair of super massive black holes from the Chandra X-ray telescope! That and more!

For the last story, I will be featuring Edward McKeown in September. To get the ball rolling I play part one of The Dive which has an excellent narrator who does a fantastic job. I can almost bet you will enjoy this 7 part effort!

Beam Me Up episode 326 is now online

Episode 326 of Beam Me Up!

Couple of good offerings this week, plus news and reviews. Like I have said….oh hell you already know lol.

Ok, I start off with a short on Neil Armstrong’s recovery from surgery. Also I make the observation of how many people just had no clue.

The first story for the afternoon is episode 11 of “In Plain Sight” by Jason Kahn. Then a session of Trek Trivia!

Next from EarthSky the new super Chilian telescope Alma is due to be at full strength by next year and scientist are excited by what they expect to get for output from the array. Plus more from EarthSky.

The Curiosity Rover is next on the conversation list. The landing and subsequent photos were exciting beyond all measure. Can’t wait for what comes next.

Finally I review the movie Outlander, which was as bad as it sounds.

In closing this week I end with part 2 of “All That Touches the Air” by An Owomoyela.

That and other incidentals this week on episode 326 of Beam Me Up

Beam Me Up Episode 325 Now Online

Yep, so what do normal people do when it's hot? Right, so what possesses me to set in a hot studio all afternoon? Yeah, I can't put a finger on it either.

So it's Beam Me Up episode 325. I start out with a read from Kallamis' article wondering if Generation Star Ships are indeed possible. Next, I wanted to get my review of Lockout (a space/prison offering) because it was right there on the blog in front of me.

Then on to our first story! Mark Webb's “Striking Twice” is a bit more than your average version of this story! Plus he managed to do it in Flash Fiction!

Next Earth Sky offers up a couple real good pieces of astro-science this week. The Milkyway is most definitly on a collision course with Andromeda, and the time is at hand...sort of...aaaaaaaand tropical lakes where you will never expect them!

Then it is time for Star Trek Trivia! Two new questions from the Star Trek Trivia tome! NASA has awarded monies to three American companies to develop a man rated space craft that will be able to put American astronauts in space from American soil on craft built in the US of A.

And our last story of the afternoon, part one of All that Touches Air by An Owomoyela read by our august reader Ron Huber.

Enjoy!
