A glance at the cereal shelves of the very near future!

In a never ending quest to get a peak around the corner and take a look at the near future, I submit this little treasure. In the very near future, this is what at least one section of you local super market will look like. From the Dvice blog:
  • "intelligent cereal box," which "uses metallic-ink-based circuitry to animate the packaging, as well as communicate with nearby computers."
Talk about myopia! I didn't see this coming at all, but I am not at all surprised. Look at what Saunders has been screamin in our ears for years now. Here it is!

I don't think this is right. How are you going to drag your children away from this stuff if you don't want to buy it.

a very very valid concern. One I am sure that has been echoed down through the years. I can remember concerns being voiced when tv cartoon characters started appearing on boxes in the 60s and sports heroes has been the mainstay for advertising packaging for as long as I can remember. This is just one example of advertising staying current with their consumers. The one thing I think we may be able to take solace in is that we are wowed by this class of packaging because it is outside our norm. Children however are far less susceptible than we think I suspect having for the most part grown up inundated with this kind of media flash. When I was a bit younger..(quiet....) I can recall a cereal company putting plastic records on the back of their product boxes. Yes, initially it did have a "wow" factor but once that wore off you found that it was a low quality gimmick of little real value. Does this mean that this new iteration will fade fast? eh...I kinda doubt it. This one has some legs to it. I think what is likely to happen is that we see variations on a theme throughout the supermarket. Even the store itself might get into the act. I can see where you might walk in with a "shopping list" app that the store can read and then post suggestions based on your purchasing history. Or flash sale items on the shelves based on your "likes". I am willing to bet that we have not yet seen
