015 Nebula awards have been released.

Nebula Award logo
From IO9    The 2015 Nebula awards have been released.  There  were a healthy mix of  print and digital.  What's more the awards were dominated by women this year.

from the article
The science fiction world has had its share of drama with the Hugo Awards as various slates have worked aggressively to push against the growing numbers of women and people of color appearing on award ballots. The Nebula Awards have demonstrated, for two years in a row, that science fiction and fantasy literature remains a strong, inclusive body of literature.

2015 Hugos & 5 “No Award” HUH?

The 2015 Hugo Awards, the World Science Fiction Convention in Seattle.

It appears that the drama started even before the nominations were out.

According to a report from Sci-Fi Storm blog, the group “Sad Puppies” attempting to influence the nomination and voting process to correct what they perceived as the infiltration of the genre by women and minorities, where it was formerly “ruled” by white males." (boy does THAT sound familiar!)

Well according to the story in Sci-Fi Storm, the Sad Puppies lost out, but their antics may have resulted in perhaps deserving winners, due possibly to the Puppies support.

There were 5 categories – Best Novella, Best Short Story, Best Related Work, Best Editor, Short Form, and Best Editor, Long Form all resulted in “No Award” winning, with four others having No Award in second place, as well as the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer also coming in second. It would appear that the voter's did not appreciate the antics of the group and soundly voted any supporters out.

That being said, here is a short list of some of the award winners.

Best Novel: The Three Body Problem, Cixin Liu, Ken Liu translator

Best Novelette: The Day the World Turned Upside Down, Thomas Olde Heuvelt, Lia Belt translator

The John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer: Wesley Chu

Ig Nobel Awards for 2010

Boing Boing informs us that the 2010 Ig Nobel Awards are out for 2010! According to Wikipedia for those not in the know -
  • The Ig Nobel Prizes are an American parody of the Nobel Prizes and are given each year in early October for ten achievements that "first make people laugh, and then make them think." Organized by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research....
So, what are some of the awards?

The medicine prize goes to psychologists Simon Rietveld and Ilja van Beest at the University of Amsterdam for discovering that breathing difficulties brought on by asthma can be alleviated by repeated roller coaster rides.

Engineering prize goes to Karina Acevedo-Whitehouse and others at the Institute of Zoology in London developed a way to collect fluids ejected from whales' blowholes by attaching petri dishes to the underside of small, remote-controlled helicopters and hovering them overhead.

Transportation prize to Mark Fricker and Dan Bebber at Oxford University, used slime mold to model an effective railway network. In the experiment, cities were represented by oat-meal that were linked to one another as the slime mold grew.

Biology prize goes to Gareth Jones who's description of the sexual antics of the short-nosed fruit bat. The research showed that females who performed oral sex on their mates copulated for longer.

Peace prize was awarded to psychologist Richard Stephens for confirming that swearing relieves pain

Public health prize awarded to Manuel Barbeito at the Industrial Health and Safety Office in Maryland for scientific studies that found microbes cling to beards, making more hirsute men a potential laboratory hazard.

Logorama (nsfw language)

From Movie Web comes this very entertaining, Oscar nominated, short film called Logorama which uses 2500 corporate logos as actors and set pieces. You might argue that this isn't science fiction, but 1 minute into the movie and you're so twisted by the truly twisted world that you will agree, this is someone's idea of an alternate reality! lol As the folks over on Gizmodo said.."By French design collective H5, Logorama is worth taking the 15 minutes or so running time out of your lunchbreak" yep..ahuh..

Chris Davies wins UK's Countdown

Now here is something you just have to appreciate! It seems Colin Davies son has been doing quite well for himself in other venues. And who better to bring us up to speed is Colin himself in a recent note to me:
  • My son Chris (the one who composed and played the Pestworld theme) has been taking part in a TV quiz show called Countdown, which is hugely popular in the UK. It's a game of math skill and word knowledge on Channel 4.
  • The news is that Chris won the current series on 18th December and became champion. The win carries quite a lot of status and has attracted the interest of our local and one national paper.
  • Although the show is available online from C4, it is blocked in the US. However a number of clips are available on youtube at:
  • and the whole final can be seen at:
Congrats Chris and excellent news Colin...
