Alls Fine At The ISS - But Curiosity Had To Be Put To Sleep

Hey this is an opinion peice.  You don't agree, fine, your rights in action, but if you want an argument instead of a discussion, go somewhere else ok?

I can tell you one thing right off the bat, I have revisited my possible choices in the next election and did some drastic changes because this is RIDICULOUS!

Ok, the ISS crew is in no danger but what pisses me off is Curiosity being put to sleep....and you know it ain't just a wakey wakey to get it going again....it's cold up there for one thing.... and according to DVICE Hubble and the other spacecraft now flying are being kept operational by NASA... and the folks over at the National Science Foundation can keep on doing the research because they are not federal employees, so that is good.

As Colin Druce-McFadden said in the DEVICE article:
  • Where it can and where it needs to be, the government is still running. We've got a hunch this whole shutdown thing isn't going to last that long. Think of it as a national tornado advisory: pop in a couple of old movies, stay safe and it'll be over before you know it.
I know, but it still is grown men and women acting like children.  Aggravates the crap out of me.

Declassified Flying Saucers!

This ought to be fun!  From the National Archives NDC blog I spy this little goodie!
  • Recently declassified records from the Aeronautical Systems Division, USAF
  •  reveal some ... perhaps never-before-seen images.
Those words and the above illustration, are contained in a document called "Project 1794, Final Development Summary Report” (d.1956)

The pages describe a project bye the USAF and a Canadian company Avro Aircraft Limited in Ontario.  Avro was contracted to construct a disk-shaped craft.

The design specs. were amazing even for today and in the 50s practically unheard of.  The craft would be designed to:
  • a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) plane designed to reach a top speed of Mach 4, with a ceiling of over 100,000 feet, and a range of over 1,000 nautical miles.
The NDC article says that the other design graphics show a craft that was very similar to those in the UFO movies of the time.

Sci-fi writers join war on terror

Nelson sent me a wild one from USA Today:

Looking to prevent the next terrorist attack, the Homeland Security Department is tapping into the wild imaginations of a group of self-described "deviant" thinkers: science-fiction writers.

The writers make up a group called Sigma, which writer Arlan Andrews put together 15 years ago to advise government officials. The last time the group gathered was in the late 1990s, when members met with government scientists to discuss what a post-nuclear age might look like, says group member Greg Bear.

Now, the Homeland Security Department is calling on the group to help with the government's latest top mission of combating terrorism.
