Review: Tesseracts 13

Tesseracts 13

23 really top notch stories. The math says that this is less than 75 cents per story. I don't care what market you're in, that's a good deal. If you're not familiar with the Tesseracts series, all the authors are Canadian and the theme is speculative fiction. Not any outright fantasy but no hard core science fiction either. Now that is not a complaint. I think the editors have a bold strategy in accepting stories that could play as fantasy, while others would be comfortable in horror or science fiction. Something for everyone is too well worn for Tesseracts when in truth the reader that feels comfortable reading say "Stone Cold" is going to feel equally comfortable with "An Abandoned Baby Carriage" where one story is about a possible contagion has the infected feel like they are slowly freezing and another spins around a baby carriage left in an deserted playground. All the while the protagonist's reality is so warped that until the end, one wonders if they or the carriage is a figment or both. Either could be fantasy and either could be science fiction. Most of the stories tread the boundary very masterfully. But then others will boldly plant their stories well within a field. An excellent example is Rebecca Bradley's "Kids these Days". Bradley's tale takes you to a world where there is an absolutely devastating illness that destroys the chances of a future generation, and Bradley finishes with a brilliant twist that leaves you smiling at how deftly you were handled all the while you are breathless at the scope of the reality. Or Belkom's "Quints" is a masterful weave of history and a possible future and a doctor caught between his oath and knowing what is in store for all involved is asked to choose. Here I was astounded by the level of research that is usually only afforded to those that would read a novel and we are given great history, science, medicine and a possible future, told at a breakneck pace but in an environment of quiet and desperation. Mark my word....Quints or something like it next year, Hugo or Nebula... and do you remember Silvia Moreno-Garcia with her story Maquech earlier on BMU? Oh wait until you read Bed of Scorpions!

Hey, hands down recommendation from me on Tesseracts 13. Whatever it takes to get this collection in your hands....you will not be disappointed!

Review: Time Machines Repaired While U Wait by K.A. Bedford

Time Machines Repaired While U Wait

I think I can safely say that this novel may hold the record for the worst title. Here is a title that screams low comedy perhaps, or at best a simplistic plot - And that dear reader would be a shame to pass this gem up. In the end the title may be marketing genius.. lol who knows! Anway:

Aloysius "Spider" Webb is a walking cliche. A down and out x-cop, released from the force for being in the end, too honest. Out of options Spider jumps at a chance to make a living wage. But the catch is, he will be fixing malfunctioning time machines. Thinking that glamour awaits, the reality of his situation is that he is trapped in a no where job, barely making ends meet working for a pig of a boss. All this would have been tolerable until a time machine blows up and leaves behind something nightmares are made of, strangers seem to be spying on him and weirdest of all he finds himself murdered in his own bed.

This list of weirdness doesn't even come close to describing the mind bending twists and turns that take place in Bedford's Time Machines Repaired While U Wait. If you are a fan of the Time Travel science fiction sub-genre you will get enough of what makes this book tick to fill four novels. At the end you will question EVERY character in the book. There are enough twists and turns, to hold the attention of even the most jaded science fiction fan. Some of the places and concepts are truly mind bending. The scope literally takes you to one of the strangest places ever. And in true potboiler cop drama, the ending is scary, disturbing and twisted in so many ways.

I didn't have much of a problem with Time Machines.... other than putting it down.

Review: Time Machines Repaired While-U-Wait by R.A. Bedford

The folks over at Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing have certainly peaked my interest. How? Well, in amongst the material sent to BMU for review was a wee bit of a booklet. What I had come across was a "teaser" for a new book by author K.A. Bedford called Time Machines, Repaired While-U-Wait" that is due for release August 15 2008. It happens to have a theme that is one of my favorites. Time Machines or Time Travel and if you throw in some tech, well I am even more entertained! Something that Bedford seems to have given us in goodly measure. Of course I am basing this on just the first chapter, however this was ample for me to seriously want to check this out when it's released. Call While U Wait, time machines with a twist. Sometime in the near future, time machines have become common as well, the family auto. Different models abound, with the venerable Tempo being the model of choice because of it's economy, for the average consumer. The most common model is the 300 which we are told are turned out by the thousands and have yet to saturate the market. The protagonists are ill used hand to mouth repairmen who are called to repair a malfing Tempo 300, speculating that a cat may be to blame, which seems to be, mysteriously a very common cause. What our intrepid service persons find is something outside their comfort zone. A Tempo that seems all wrong on so many levels. Just setting in the machine gives one vast amounts of unease. At the end of chapter 1 the repairmen agree, against their better judgment, to remove the unit for repair. I know, I was left turning the page wanting more and that is a telling enough review in my book. Yep, looking forward to August. I will try to get a full review as soon as I can get a copy of the complete text, but so far so good!

2 new books from EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing

Justyn from EDGE Science Fiction and Fantasy Publishing sent us a note that next month they will have two new releases: JEMMA7729 by Phoebe Wray and Sword Masters by Selina Rosen. Here is some of the information on the books.

JEMMA7729 by Phoebe Wray The civil unrest is over. Citizens live in domed megacities, the only safe and healthy places. Or so Jemma7729 has been told and believes. But when her father takes her into the Countryside, and she sees the stars in a free night sky, she begins to doubt everything she's learned. And to challenge it. The State responds quickly: incarceration. Jemma escapes, becomes a notorious saboteur, leader of a revolutionary shadow government. Many applaud her as a heroine, but the State wants her for rebellion, female aggression, failure to make choices, and inappropriate behavior. If Jemma7729 is caught, she faces immediate, permanent and uncontestable deletion. JEMMA7729 by Phoebe Wray $15.95 US 256 pages

Sword Masters by Selina Rosen
The Sword Masters have strict rules about who can and who can not be one of them, but Tarius is determined to avenge the death of her father and she doesn't care about the Jethrik's archaic rules or about breaking them. Especially the one that says women can't wield steel. Her parents were both great warriors and upon her father's death at the hands of their ancestral enemy the Amalites, his cause becomes hers. Like her father before her, she joins the Sword Masters academy. But while he only kept one secret from them, she is keeping two. When the headmaster's beautiful, willful daughter Jena falls in love with her thinking she's a man, she knows that this, and not an enemies sword or spear, will be her undoing. Tarius leads the Armies of the King in battle after battle, securing a victory for him against the Amalites. She though she saves the King's life not once but twice, she knows that even this won't stop his wrath when he learns all that she truly is.
Sword Masters by Selina Rosen $19.95 US 354 pages
