Flatulence Could Prevent Cancer......

Ok.....I know......Juvenile.  But how many chances in life will I ever get to say, with a straight face, that smelling farts could prevent cancer? Not to many I fear.

But this in just how The Indychannel.com article started:
  • Scientists at the University of Exeter say that smelling farts could actually prevent cancer, along with other disease.
It's got scientists and other disease right in the opening sentence!  That makes it legit in my book!

Time magazine is even jumping in with this:
  • while the smelly gas can be “noxious in large doses,” the researchers say that an occasional whiff of flatulence could reduce the risks of cancer, stroke, heart attacks, arthritis and dementia by preserving mitochondria.
Stroke, heart attacks, arthritis and dementia is a damn good spread in ANY cure and dosage is lite!

Just think about all the people that owe you a Thanks!

A Cure For Many Viral Infections Found?

Rhino/cold virus
From BBC News via IO9 comes the news that a drug to treat a large variety of viral infection has possibly been discovered.

MIT research scientist Todd Rider says he's developed a drug named Draco, which he says has successfully destroyed 15 different viruses in lab trials.

The reason that earlier attempts to develop a successful broad spectrum anti-viral is the fundamental difference between biologic infectious agents (germs if you will) and viral is much in how they reproduce. Microbes and their ilk can reproduce by fission by themselves. If you kill the microbe, you control the spread of infection. Viruses on the other hand invade a cell and hijack the cell's reproductive machinery to make copies of the invading virus in large quantities. So many in fact that the cell burst spreading copies of the virus, that start the process all over again. The virus is only at risk while outside a cell. Once they have invaded a cell they are virtually undetectable.

Rider's drug Draco uses this "behavior" to kill the virus. Draco consists of two proteins. One to detect a viral invader and the other to kill the cell outright so that it can not be used for reproduction. This approach should be effective from everything from a cold virus to HIV. Initial tests have been promising but there is still a long trial schedule ahead for Draco or another anti-viral.

'Waving' cancer goodbye!

CBS news reports that a promising new inovation may allow doctors to 'wave' certain cancers away using nothing more than radio frequency waves. John Kanzius, A former radio and TV engineer and one-time station owner, , believes radio waves could somehow be harnessed to destroy cancer, without drugs or invasive surgery. Kanzius' treatments would involve a patient being injected with tiny metal nano-particles, which would be carried through the bloodstream by a targeting molecule and attach only to cancerous cells. The patient would then be exposed to an energy field created by radio waves, and feel nothing, while the nano-particles would generate enough heat to destroy their cancerous host cell.

Lab experiments using nano particles and cancer analogs have demostrated that the basic concept is sound, however targeting cancer cells will be the biggest challenge.

Kanzius' invention has caught the attention of Dr. Steven Curley, a surgical oncologist and cancer researcher at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. "This has the most fascinating potential I've seen in anything in my twenty years of cancer research," Curley stated in an interview.
