Sci-Fi-Inspired Concept Ships

Shaun Saunders sends in a link to an article in Wired. From the article:
  • The The conceptships.org website run by Igor Tkac showcases these artists' renditions of spaceships and other fantastical creations. From retro-futuristic aerial attack machines to automated deep-sea treasure hunters, here are some of the coolest. website run by Igor Tkac showcases these artists' renditions of spaceships and other fantastical creations. The pane at the right is just a sample. The Wired article has several to click on and of course you can head over to conceptships.org for more or hit the Conceptships blog which is just crammed with graphics of conceptual art of space transport, Battlestar Galactica art, future aircraft idea for the US military... and tons more. Worth a look.

Artist Eric Joyner's Artificial Enlightenment series

From Boing Boing:

  • [Eric Joyner's] new collection, titled Artificial Enlightenment, features the machines in their day-to-day lives involving donut factories, motorcycle rides, and steam train catastrophes.
His works are being displayed at Culver City's Corey Helford Gallery, starting in September. The gallery, in speaking about Joyner's inspirations writes:
  • Joyner is "inspired by science fiction, toys, and Brandywine artists and illustrators of the 1900’s."
His complete show is viewable online.

Artist Mark Bryan's futuristic artwork

Through IO9 I read about artist Mark Bryan and his skewed look into a futuristic society. Check out a full gallery of Bryan's work, including a robot Mona Lisa, clown carnage and weird fembots. Bryan describes his paintings as, "a cosmic stage for human activity. I'm in the audience like a court reporter taking notes with my sketchbook and brushes, playing the critic, here to observe and make comment."

Electric Sheep Dreams

Mower was created by Osman Khan, a professor at Carnegie Mellon's School of Art. Mower roams around using GPS to place itself on grassy areas, has collision avoidance sensors and makes the most amusing array of sounds as it clatters about. Clearly intended to be a humorous reference to robotic lawnmowers and the "green" method of using real sheep to do it. Inspired by Philip Dick? Very possibly so.

Hold the Milky Way in the palm of your hand

Remember that moment in Men in Black when we find out that the whole galaxy is held inside a crystal? I thought that was a pretty neat graphic. Well now we can get close to the same thing. Living World's has developed the Milky Way galaxy 3D model. This model is a Lucite like block that is totally clear except this cube contains 80,000 laser rendered stars that represent the Milky Way galaxy. Each point was created using real space data. However this piece of art doesn't come cheap. It will set you back over 700 dollars US.

These Giant Blocs Are Made of People

Ok, I know - science and science fiction Got it, so I slip in a gripe about the fcc's dead site, maybe I had a weak moment. Ready for another? Is this Science Fiction? Nope! is it Science? no way! But it is proof that we are now living in some sort of weird future that none of us in our wildest imagination would ever have conceived! How so you foolishly ask? Oooooooh let me enlighten you:

It seems that the Lisson Gallery in London has a rather "wasteful" display. Shall I continue? ok.....

Mexican artist Santiago Sierra collaborated with Indian NGO
Sulabh International to collect tons of human poop gathered by scavengers of the Untouchable caste in Delhi and Jaipur. He then mixed it with plastic, molded it into 21 giant blocks approximately the length of a human being, and shipped the blocks to the UK.

I sh oh wait.. someone did... Here are the links to the original story

Thanks to IO9 for the original post

Pictures from the future past

Shaun sent me a link of what I first thought were curiously quaint pictures depicting possible futures from the year 1910. These paintings, though grounded in the preconceptions of the era are eerily prophetic. Though these early prognosticators didn't know it, they were predicting e-mail, electronic news, ipods, drive-thru, Segways, various self propelled war machinery and many more. Take a look....its called paleo-future.

Retirement Home for Super Heroes

here is a totally irreverent look at how a normal day at the "home" would look like if it were populated with superheroes. By way of Artist Martin Margulies (click photo or article title to enlarge picture)
