Do Parallel Universes Exist?


I was just looking through YouTube when I lucked onto a video from Beyond Science and narrated by Michael Chen.  Why was I so lucky?  Well first and foremost it's primary focus is that of  Universes.  Yep, multiple.  One of my Faves, the concept that every actions spins off a new universe. 
Though one must ponder the implications of this concept.   I feel much less disconcerted with the idea of pocket universes

They make a good case for instances like De-Ja-Vu (the weird feeling that you have been or done something  weirdly similar to present events.  Or even stranger, you are sure that you did or said or read something  that is subtly different.  The video shows some incredibly strange examples.

Astronomers find evidence of another Universe....

Nelson sends in this startling article from New Scientist Space online -

IN AUGUST, radio astronomers announced that they had found an enormous hole in the universe. Nearly a billion light years across. The void has far fewer stars, gas and galaxies than usual. It is bigger than anyone imagined possible and is beyond the present understanding of cosmology. Physicists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, have a breathtaking explanation: "It is the unmistakable imprint of another universe beyond the edge of our own!" It is a staggering claim. If right, the giant void is the first experimental evidence for another universe.

Gaping hole found in universe

A giant hole in the Universe is devoid of galaxies, stars and even lacks dark matter, astronomers said on Thursday. The void is nearly a billion light-years across and astronomers have no idea why it is there. Lawrence Rudnick writing in the Astrophysical Journal, with colleagues Shea Brown and Liliya Williams said they were examining a cold spot , and found the giant hole. "What we've found is not normal, based on either observational studies or on computer simulations of the large-scale evolution of the Universe," Williams said in a statement. The astronomers said the region even appeared to lack dark matter, which cannot be seen directly but is usually detected by measuring gravitational forces.

Nelson fired over an interesting article in Salon.com

The article concerns the argument among scientists that in the words of the late cosmologist Fred Hoyle who called the universe "a put-up job." Or princeton physicist Freeman Dyson (who proposed the Dyson sphere that is a common science fiction theme even today) has suggested that the universe, in some sense, "knew we were coming." British-born cosmologist Paul Davies calls this cosmic fine-tuning the "Goldilocks Enigma." Like the porridge for the three bears, he says the universe is "just right" for life. Many scientists hate this idea -- what's often called "the anthropic principle." They suspect it's a trick to argue for a designer God.

Is the evidence for multiple universes all around us?

I thought that this article that Shaun Saunders sent me was particularly interesting. A few weeks ago we read his story "Hubble" and we just finished reading Paul Melko's "The Walls of the Universe" both about the effects and possibilities of multiple universes. Good tales both, but your often left thinking that its much too fantastic. Well some scientists seem to feel differently! Here is an excerpt.

IT HAS long been accepted, at least in theory, that other universes might exist and might even collide with ours. Yet the idea that we would ever be able to see the aftermath of such collisions, and so find evidence of other universes, has seemed beyond the scope of science. According to the standard model of cosmology, our universe underwent a phase of exponential expansion, known as inflation, just after the big bang. In theory, inflation could still be happening, with bubbles of space-time suddenly blowing up to create new pocket universes. The usual assumption is that these other universes are disconnected from us, and that we can't enter them and look around, or observe them in any way. "People often criticise discussions of multiple universes as meaningless because we can't detect whether they actually exist," says Anthony Aguirre of the University of California, Santa Cruz. Aguirre thinks the proof of cosmic collisions could be all around us, as imprints in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) left over from the big bang.
