Asteroid Impact on Mars: Collision Probability Increased

The chance that asteroid 2007 WD5 will impact Mars on January 30th has increased from 1.3 percent to 3.9 percent. That’s the new estimation from the Near Earth Object Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The impact probability resulting from recent orbital refinement that have increased the chances to a surprising 3.9 percent.

This would be great if it occurred and received any media attention. It would likely increase public interest in space exploration and SF. But with a 96% chance of a miss and an even greater chance that the news channels will be focused on some important news like Britney or Paris getting a parking ticket, I'm not holding out much hope.

What is it about this stuff. Now if Mars makes a close approach, you hear about it all over the place, but an impact between two objects in space..? faagetaboutit. When Shoemaker-Levey hit I thought that was one of the most astounding events in modern history.... nobody even knows what a Shoemaker-Levey is!
